Sperm-tastic

Or rather, not so sperm-tastic depending on how you look at it.  Sperm can live for up to 7 days inside the vagina.  That's right, SEVEN days.  If you consider the fact that women are fertile for about 2-3 days a month, then this puts the odds of getting pregnant at about 9-10 days a month.  So say you and lover-boy have sex on Friday night, then you fast forward a week and drop an egg...yep you guessed it. That tricky little sperm is just lying in wait hungry for a match with your precious cargo.

Unless you want to get pregnant always always always use protection!  And let's be honest, even if pregnancy was never an issue, would you really want sperm hanging around inside of you for that long?

While we're in this area, let me fill you in on something called 'cowper's fluid'.  This is not a new health drink. This is actually what scientists have named that pre-ejaculatory fluid that leaks out and lubricates the penis when it becomes aroused. The real slippery situation here is that this fluid contains sperm left over from the last ejaculation. Kinda like those guests at a party that just never quite get the hint when it's time to clear out. This cowper's fluid is just one of many reasons why the 'pull-out' method of birth control is just not a wise move.  (for those of you wrinkling your forehead in confusion, this is where the penis is literally pulled out of the vagina before it shoots off)

Sperm is not to be taken for granted. It has the numbers, the endurance and the slyness of a cunning opponent.  These are wonderful things if you want to fertilize that egg of yours. It is not wonderful if you don't.  So, just in case you missed it before or didn't get the message clearly enough--always use protection!
